They say there’s more pubs in York than days of the year but we don’t think that’s strictly true – probably around 200 though! From medieval to modern, you’re spoilt for choice.
Our top 5 pubs in York
130-134 Micklegate, York YO1 6JX, +44 (0)1904 620773
Located on Mickelgate, a cobbled Georgian street close to both the train station and the city centre, Brew Dog makes our list for its buzzing atmosphere, cutting edge design and fantastic pizzas. There’s a big selection of beers as you would expect, including non-alcoholic and gluten-free. Mickelgate has undergone something of a renaissance in recent years, with many of our favourite restaurants and cafes located on this street.

Located within the historic walls on the foodie strip Walmgate, Brew York is a brewery with a difference. Enjoy a beer or two whilst watching the beers ferment in their unique taproom. There’s a characterful riverside courtyard too. Family-friendly til 8pm and dog friendly as well.

9 High Petergate, York, YO1 7EN, +44 (0)1904 631 536
Located in a Grade 2 listed, 1640 building on charming High Petergate, we really like Eagle and Child for its atmospheric hidden spaces, quaint courtyard and Friday fizz deals! With a locaton just moments from The Minster, it’s a great option for a drink before enjoying lunch or dinner at one of our favourites near-by.
Opening Hours: Mon to Wed: 11:00 – 23:00, Thurs to Sat: 11:00 – 00:00 , Sun: 11:00 – 22:30
48 Stonegate, York YO1 8AS, +44 (0)1904 640009
One of our favourite pub in York, this is the place we normally take visitors. Located on arguably York’s prettiest street, Stonegate, The House of Trembling Madness boasts a fabulous medieval drinking hall upstairs and an Aladdin’s cave of beers downstairs. They have recently opened a 2nd outlet on Lendal, a Georgian building with a shop as well. We also feature their quirky self catering apartments. With such a small kitchen area, the food on offer is really something special. We’ve enjoyed many a traditional pie, stew and platter.
